Sport heart
Identification and history
- Name: Jasmine
- Report and medical history: Horse, Sella Italiano, 6 years old, female.
This horse was admitted for pre-purchase examination and a 2/5 systolic murmur was audible on the right side, but no murmur was heard on the left side.
An echocardiographic examination was performed.
Diagnostics
The right parasternal short-axis view with Color Doppler imaging showed a moderate tricuspid valve regurgitation. No other valvular regurgitation was observed.
The diameter of the pulmonary artery was smaller than the diameter of the aorta. The diameter of the left atrium was 13.0 - 13.5 cm and the diameter of the left ventricle was 11.5 cm. This is well within normal limits for a horse of this size.
Images were acquired using the MyLab™X8VET system.
Conclusions and treatment
The tricuspid valve insufficiency (low pressure side of the cardiovascular system) is most likely not clinically significant.
All morphological parameters were within the normal range and the horse is to be considered fit for the proposed use. Acquired tricuspid valve insufficiency is frequently found in sport horses, as training increases heart size and therewith the annular ring of the valves (a “sport heart”).
